It’s 3:00 on a Friday afternoon and while most students are running out of school ready to start their weekend, there are groups of girls staying behind, eager to get to work. These are girls who participate in Techbridge after-school programs. This year Techbridge programs are serving more than 450 girls in 15 schools in Oakland, San Lorenzo, and Mt. Diablo Unified School Districts.
Read about our after-school programs and you’ll discover that Techbridge gives girls the chance to work with tools, build robots, and program animations. Techbridge programs start with snacks that give the girls a chance to recharge and an icebreaker that helps them get to know one another and learn about new careers. Then, it’s on to hands-on fun and games. The programs come to a close with time for reflection and discussion. Some weeks the girls write in their journals about new careers they learned about or challenges they overcame. Other times they discuss the discoveries they made about engineering and science. The after-school programs run throughout through May.
