SNEAK PREVIEW: Summer Academy 2014

Summer Academy SuppliesMark your calendars! Tell your friends! We’ve reached one of Techbridge’s favorite times of year: Summer Academy season!

Over the next two weeks, 62 Techbridge middle school girls in Oakland and San Jose will explore the exciting world of hacking and making during our annual Summer Academy. The girls will test out brand-new, high-tech computer science and electrical engineering curriculum (shout-out to our Director of Curriculum, Emily McLeod), journey on field trips to IDEO and GoldieBlox, and meet a variety of industry role models from Samsung, Genentech, UC Berkeley, and beyond. Activities during the week-long camps (first in Oakland, then in San Jose) include modifying clothing to light up and blink; learning how to code Arduino microcontrollers to integrate with motors, temperature sensors, speakers, and more; and, in our grand finale, “hacking” an object to solve an everyday problem in a creative way.

Intrigued? To learn more about our projects and progress, check out our special Summer Academy Tumblr blog, which will give you the latest updates on Summer Academy fun. Techbridge staff will be using the #SummerAcademyTeachers tag, while girls will assign their own tags based on a camp name of their choice. It’s sure to be a blast, so stay tuned!
