Role Models Matter - An Evolving Toolkit

Role models play a critical role in shaping a young person’s aspirations.  It’s amazing to hear a girl say, “I want to be the next Sally Ride. Or the next Jane Goodall or Anita Borg."  By connecting with a role model, a young girl’s hopes become real, concrete and achievable.

Although there are many professionals with the desire to share their journey and experience, many don’t quite know how to go about engaging kids in conversations or telling their personal story.  To support role models and increase their effectiveness, Techbridge developed The Role Models Matter Project, a training program and set of resources created in collaboration between Techbridge, the Society of Women Engineers, the National Girls Collaborative Project, and Girl Scout Councils.  Funded by the National Science Foundation, Role Models Matter brings vital resources to role models and girl-serving organizations.

The Role Models Matter Online Training Toolkit is designed to help anyone who wants to be a role model develop skills to engage girls and underrepresented youth in STEM through readings, videos, questions, and more. Techbridge recently enhanced the toolkit with some great new resources including Choosing a STEM activityWhere can I volunteer?, and STEM Role Models 101! Check it out!
